Two paths to fresher, firmer skin compared
Which one suits you better depends on your individual skin goal — the two methods set different cosmetic priorities and can also be combined. At Isabels Beauty Club in Munich-Laim, HIFU for the face starts at €149 and microneedling at €120. In a consultation, we honestly work out together which method fits your particular skin.
“Should I do HIFU or rather Microneedling?” I hear this question almost every week. Both are among my favorite treatments — but they solve different tasks. Here is the honest breakdown.
The short answer
If it’s about firming and contour — a softer jawline, sagging cheeks, fading firmness —, then HIFU is usually the right choice. If it’s about skin quality — pores, fine lines, a tired or uneven complexion, the appearance of scars —, then Microneedling is your method.
One works in the deeper layers, the other at the surface. That’s why they don’t rule each other out — quite the opposite.
What HIFU does
HIFU stands for focused ultrasound. The energy is bundled and directed into the deeper layers of the skin — precisely where the structure-giving fibers sit. Through the controlled warmth, the body is encouraged to produce new collagen, and the skin tightens from within. HIFU thus reaches a layer that creams and surface methods cannot get to.
Ideal for: beginning to moderate sagging, a soft jawline, sunken cheeks, neck and décolleté.
What Microneedling does
With Microneedling, I create countless micro-fine channels in the uppermost layer of the skin using fine needles. This stimulates the skin’s self-renewal and at the same time channels active ingredients deep into the skin — in my treatments especially with salmon DNA (polynucleotides), which can make the skin look noticeably plumper and fresher. The complexion becomes finer, pores appear smaller, and the appearance of scars and fine lines can be softened.
Ideal for: large-pored or dull skin, fine lines, an uneven complexion, the appearance of acne scars, a lack of freshness.
The differences at a glance
- Depth of action: HIFU deep (structure) · Microneedling surface (complexion)
- Main benefit: HIFU tightens · Microneedling refines
- What you feel: HIFU a warm tingling · Microneedling a light scratching, afterwards redness like a mild sunburn
- Downtime: HIFU none · Microneedling one to two days of redness possible
- First results: both after weeks, because new collagen needs time
- Price face: HIFU from €149 (full €399) · Microneedling from €120 (with salmon DNA €220)
When I recommend what
For example, a client in her mid-50s comes to me who notices that her jawline is becoming softer — there I rely on HIFU. Another, in her early 30s, is bothered by her pores and a dull complexion after the summer — there Microneedling with salmon DNA is the lovelier answer.
And if I want both?
Then we combine them. HIFU lays the firm foundation, Microneedling polishes the surface. We don’t do this on the same day, but with some time in between — the exact order and the interval I discuss individually with you, depending on your skin.
Isabel’s verdict
There is no blanket “better” — there is only “better suited to your goal.” If you’re unsure, that is exactly the reason for a consultation. I take a look at your skin and tell you honestly which path brings you closer to what you want — or whether the combination makes sense for you.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between HIFU and Microneedling?
- HIFU works with focused ultrasound in the deeper layers of the skin and tightens the tissue. Microneedling works with fine needles on the skin's surface and refines the complexion, pores and fine lines.
- What helps better with sagging skin?
- When firmness fades and you notice a loss of contour on the cheeks or chin, HIFU is usually the more suitable choice because it addresses the deeper layers. Microneedling is better suited for the complexion, pores and fine lines.
- Can you combine HIFU and Microneedling?
- Yes, the two complement each other well: HIFU for tightening in the deeper layers, Microneedling for a refined complexion at the surface. The time between the treatments is discussed individually.
- What does each cost?
- Microneedling for the face starts at €120, with salmon DNA at €220. HIFU for the face starts at €149 for a small zone, the full face is €399.
