What the treatment really feels like

Laser hair removal is usually felt to be quite bearable, often described as a brief, warm snapping sensation — though how it feels varies from person to person. Modern diode lasers work with integrated cooling, which makes the treatment more comfortable for many people. At Isabels Beauty Club in Munich-Laim, a single session costs between €35 and €120 depending on the area.

The most honest question before your first treatment — and I’ll answer it just as honestly: no, laser hair removal is not a painful ordeal. But “you don’t feel a thing” would be a lie. Here’s exactly what to expect.

The short, honest answer

Most of my clients describe it as a brief, warm snap — as if a thin rubber band briefly flicked against the skin. It’s very manageable, lasts only a fraction of a second per pulse, and most people chat with me happily throughout the treatment.

Why modern lasers are so much more comfortable

The big difference is the device. I work with a diode laser with built-in contact cooling: the applicator cools the skin at the very moment the light pulse is delivered. This cooling takes the edge off the sensation of warmth. Older devices without cooling were noticeably more uncomfortable — which is where the reputation the laser sometimes still carries comes from.

These areas are felt more

Not every spot feels the same. A rough guide:

  • Felt more intensely: upper lip, underarms, bikini line — anywhere the skin is thin and sits close over the bone.
  • Very manageable: legs, arms, back, stomach — larger areas with a bit more padding.

The good news: it’s precisely the sensitive areas that are small and finished within a few minutes.

What affects the sensation

  • Your skin type and hair density — thick, dark hairs respond more strongly to the light.
  • Fresh tan — tanned skin is more sensitive, which is why I don’t treat it.
  • Your cycle — around your period the skin is often more sensitive.
  • Caffeine — a lot of coffee beforehand can increase sensitivity.

My tips to keep it comfortable

  • Shave the area the day before (don’t epilate, don’t wax — the root has to stay in the skin).
  • Come with untanned, clean skin, with no cream or deodorant on the area.
  • Don’t schedule sensitive appointments right around your period.
  • On the day of your treatment, go easy on caffeine.
  • Tell me at any point — I’ll adjust the pace and intensity to suit you.

Why several sessions are needed

This has nothing to do with how it feels and everything to do with biology: the laser only reaches hairs that are currently in the growth phase — and that’s always just a portion of them. So we work through all the growth cycles across several sessions a few weeks apart. Depending on the area and hair type, that’s usually six to ten appointments, after which things calm down considerably.

What does it cost?

Prices depend on the area — small areas like the upper lip from €35, underarms €50, bikini line from €50, full legs €120. We’ll discuss larger combinations and full-body treatments individually.

Isabel’s takeaway

If you know waxing, the laser will pleasantly surprise you — and unlike waxing, you’ll be rid of the hairs long-term instead of tearing them out again every few weeks. Come in for a no-obligation consultation here in Munich-Laim; then I’ll test on a small area how the laser feels for you.

Frequently asked questions

Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most people find it very manageable. It feels like a brief, warm snap from a rubber band. Modern diode lasers with built-in cooling make the treatment noticeably more comfortable than older devices.
Which areas of the body are more sensitive?
Areas with thinner skin like the upper lip, underarms or bikini line are felt more intensely than the legs, arms or back. But these areas are small and treated quickly.
How can I make the treatment more comfortable?
Shave the area the day before, skip caffeine on the day of your appointment, come with untanned skin, and try not to schedule sensitive areas right around your period.
How many sessions do I need?
Because the laser only reaches hairs in the active growth phase, several sessions a few weeks apart are needed — depending on the area and hair type, usually six to ten.
