Intense Pulsed Light
with intense pulsed light – Isabel explains this all-around talent.
IPL treatment in Munich and the surrounding area – skin rejuvenation, hair removal and pigment treatment with intense pulsed light. Isabel, founder of Isabels Beauty Club and an experienced beautician with 25 years in the field, answers the most important questions.
What is IPL?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It is a technology I have used countless times over my 25 years as a beautician, and one I would genuinely call an all-around talent.
Unlike a laser, which uses only a single wavelength, an IPL device emits a broad spectrum of light wavelengths. With special filters, I can tailor this spectrum precisely – depending on whether I want to remove hair, lighten pigment spots or rejuvenate the skin. That is what makes IPL so incredibly versatile.
The light passes through the surface of the skin and is absorbed by certain pigments: by the melanin in hairs and pigment spots, or by the hemoglobin in dilated blood vessels. The light energy is converted into heat and acts specifically on the melanin or hemoglobin – without harming the surrounding skin. At the same time, the warmth can stimulate collagen production, which may contribute to a fresher-looking complexion.
IPL is like a Swiss Army knife in aesthetics: one device, many possibilities. That is exactly why I have valued it for more than two decades. – Isabel
What can IPL do?
That is the wonderful part – the areas of application are truly broad. In my studio, I use IPL for four main areas:
How does an IPL treatment work?
An IPL session with me takes 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the area being treated. For facial rejuvenation it is about 30 minutes, and for larger areas such as the legs it takes correspondingly longer. Here is how it works:
Before the first treatment, I analyze your skin and hair type and determine the optimal settings. I explain exactly what you can expect – honestly and realistically.
The skin is cleansed thoroughly. For hair removal, the area must be shaved 24 hours beforehand. I apply a cooling contact gel that optimizes the light transmission and protects the skin.
With the IPL handpiece, I deliver targeted flashes of light onto the skin. You feel a light tingling or pinching sensation – comparable to the snap of a rubber band. The integrated cooling makes it very comfortable.
After the treatment, I soothe the skin with a cooling care product and apply sun protection. You can head straight back out – mild redness usually subsides within a few hours.
Is IPL right for me?
IPL is incredibly versatile. In my studio, I address the most varied of concerns with it. I particularly recommend it for:
- Unwanted hair – face, underarms, bikini area, legs, arms
- Pigment spots – age spots, sun spots, freckles
- Diffuse redness and visible capillaries in the skin’s appearance
- Dull, tired skin – photorejuvenation can bring the glow back
- Fine lines and first wrinkles – through collagen stimulation
- Blemishes and the appearance of acne scars
Yes, and I take it very seriously. IPL works best on light to medium skin with dark hair. For very dark or heavily tanned skin, caution is needed. For blonde, red or white hair, IPL is unfortunately less effective for hair removal – here I recommend our diode laser with SHR technology. In a personal consultation, I clarify exactly which method is best for you.
How many sessions do I need?
That depends on the treatment goal. Here are my experience-based estimates:
Hair removal: 6 to 10 sessions, 4 to 8 weeks apart. You will see a clear reduction after just 2–3 treatments. Hair removal calls for patience, because the light only reaches hairs in the active growth phase.
Skin rejuvenation: 2 to 5 sessions, 3 to 4 weeks apart. The skin already looks fresher after the first session. The full effect can develop over several weeks as new collagen forms.
Pigment spots: 2 to 4 sessions. The treated spots first darken – that is intended! – and then fade within 1–2 weeks. Very satisfying to watch.
I always tell my clients: give your skin time to renew itself. The best results come with patience and consistency – and then they really can be impressive. – Isabel
My tips before and after the treatment
In 25 years I have learned that the right preparation and aftercare make the difference between a good result and an outstanding one. Here are my recommendations:
Before the treatment
- No sun and no tanning bed for 2–4 weeks
- Do not use self-tanner
- For hair removal: do not wax or epilate for 4–12 weeks beforehand
- Shave 24 hours beforehand (for hair removal)
- No retinol products for 1 week beforehand
After the treatment
- Sun protection SPF 50 for at least 2 weeks
- Avoid direct sun
- No sports and no sauna for 24–48 hours
- Cooling, gentle care products
- No peelings or fruit acids for 1 week
- Do not scratch pigment spots — let them flake off naturally
- Drink plenty of water — well-hydrated skin responds better My extra tip: drink especially plenty of water in the days before and after the treatment. Well-hydrated skin responds better to the light pulses and regenerates faster. It sounds trivial, but it really does make a difference!
IPL vs. laser – where is the difference?
I honestly get this question every day. My honest answer: it depends on what you want to achieve. Both technologies have their strengths:
In my studio I offer both technologies and advise each client individually. For pure hair removal, I often recommend the diode laser because it is more efficient. For a fresher-looking complexion, pigment spots and visible redness, IPL is frequently the better choice. And sometimes I combine the two – that is the advantage of having every tool in-house.
Isabel’s conclusion on IPL
Because IPL is one of the most proven and versatile technologies there is in aesthetic skincare. In 25 years I have carried out thousands of IPL treatments, and I am still amazed time and again at how effective and gentle this method can be.
Whether you want to address pigment spots, freshen up your complexion, cosmetically soften visible redness or start hair removal – IPL can achieve a great deal here. And the best part: it is gentle and has no downtime. How the result turns out is individual to each person – which is exactly what I discuss honestly in advance with my clients here in Munich and the surrounding area.
